Length: 23-26 cm (9.75 inches)

Status: Common

Habitat: Common pratincoles are often seen around the margins of fresh or alkaline lakes in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

Food: Common pratincoles feed chiefly on swarming insects which they scoop from the air with a graceful, rapid flight.

Social System/Behavior: The common pratincole nests in large colonies in flat areas with short, patchy vegetation. Nesting occurs from April through September.

Flocks of several thousand are often seen feeding together.

Predators: Small mammalian predators as well as birds of prey are its main enemies. Turn to Next Page
